Evidence for a GABAergic Projection from the Dorsal Nucleus of the Lateral Lemniscus to the Inferior Colliculus

Abstract: This study attempts to determine whether the pathways from the guinea pig dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (DNLL) to the inferior colliculus (IC) use gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) as a transmitter. Injections of kainic acid (KA) were used to destroy neurons in the left DNLL. Two to 4 days after the injection, Nissl-stained sections through the lesion site showed destruction of the DNLL neurons. The lesions varied in size; 12-100% of the DNLL neurons were destroyed on the injected side without damage to… Show more

“…Type V units seem less likely to provide the INH input because they show broad tuning at high levels and exist within a restricted range of BFs . External sources of the INH inputs include GABAergic projections from the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (Shneiderman et al 1993). …”

“…Major excitatory synaptic inputs to ICC neurons come from the dorsal and ventral cochlear nuclei and the medial and lateral superior olive. At the same time, ICC neurons receive ascending inhibitory inputs from the lateral superior olive and the nuclei of the lateral lemniscus (Adams 1979;Saint Marie et al 1989;Shneiderman et al 1993;Riquelme et al 2001). This combination of excitatory and inhibitory inputs ascending through the lateral lemniscus is one of several unique and important characteristics of the ICC.…”

“…Together these observations suggest that a labeled band of DNLL input together with the adjacent unlabeled space is likely to form a layer composed of ipsilateral and contralateral projections. DNLL neurons utilize the neurotransmitter GABA and make symmetric synaptic contacts with the soma and proximal dendrites of IC neurons (Brunso-Bechtold et al, 1981;Adams and Mugnaini, 1984;Shneiderman et al, 1988Shneiderman et al, ,1993Bajo et al, 1993;Merchan et al, 1994;Gonzalez-Hernandez et al, 1996;Kelly and Li, 1997;Chen et al, 1999;van Adel et al, 1999). Although much more is known about the developmental mechanisms of glutamatergic circuit formation, important progress has been made in understanding the development of inhibitory circuits in the auditory brainstem such as those in the SOC (Kandler, 2004;Kandler and Gillespie, 2005).…”
