Evidence for a curvilinear relationship between sympathetic nervous system activation and women's physiological sexual arousal

Abstract: There is increasing evidence that women’s physiological sexual arousal is facilitated by moderate sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activation. Literature also suggests that the level of SNS activation may play a role in the degree to which SNS activity affects sexual arousal. We provide the first empirical examination of a possible curvilinear relationship between SNS activity and women’s genital arousal using a direct measure of SNS activation in 52 sexually functional women. The relationship between heart ra… Show more

“…Diastolic BP was also associated with RPC ( r = .65, P = .001). Consistent with extent literature 26,27 , the three measures of HRV were all significantly correlated with one another (SDNN and RMSSD: r = .90, p < .001; SDNN and pNN50: r = .85, p < .001; RMSSD and pNN50: r = .96, p < .001). Based upon these associations, HR was included as a covariate in the mediation analyses involving SSA as an outcome and systolic and diastolic BP were added as covariates in analyses with RPC as a criterion variable.…”

“…Lorenz, Harte, Hamilton and Meston's (2012) demonstration of a threshold sympathetic nervous system activation facilitating female sexual arousal (the ''curvilinear relationship'') resonates with young men taking their dates to scary movies or on thrill rides.…”

“…Oxytocin has a broad effect on inflammation, suppressing the inflammatory action of pro-inflammatory cytokines (88) and possibly increasing production of IL-4 (87). And of course, there are many other potential mechanisms, such as such as immune adaptation to repeated contact with a partner’s microbiome (89); immune redistribution to combat sexually transmitted infections or other immune challenges associated with repeated contact with the intimate partner; activation of the autonomic nervous system during sexual arousal (90); or input from the central nervous system during sexual stimulation. It is very likely, given the complexity of the associations noted here, that no one of these mechanisms will fully explain the impact of sexual activity on immune function.…”
