Evidence Briefing: How Can We Promote Child Language and Literacy Development in an Increasingly Digital World?

Abstract

Children are surrounded by portable digital tools that afford novel and quite intuitive interactions. Yet the evidence on how digital media influences children's language and literacy development is sparse and inconsistent, and clear guidelines for parents, educators, and policymakers are lacking. This evidence briefing critically reviews the latest scientific evidence and translates it into actionable recommendations: Managing screen time, selecting digital content, and co-using digital media. These recommendations are also illustrated in an accessible video format, available in different languages. By translating complex research findings into actionable recommendations for stakeholders, we aim to promote e a balanced use of digital media for children’s language and literacy growth in the current digital ecology.
