Evidence-based SMarty Support for Variability Identification and Representation in Component Models

Software Product Line (SPL) is a promising approach for specific domain software artifacts reuse. In order to ensure SPL quality it is essential to perform activities for verification and validation. In this scenario, one applies software revision to the quality control process in order to ensure the quality of a software engineering process in each stage. Amongst software revision techniques, there is the checklist-based reading technique. This technique allows the detection of several defect types, whereas improves the quality of the software products. This paper presents the empirical evaluation of an SPL inspection technique based on checklist, named SMartyCheck. The main objective of SMartyCheck is to inspect Unified Modeling Language (UML) use case and class SPL diagrams based on the Stereotype-based Management of Variability (SMarty) approach. For evaluating SMartyCheck it was adopted the sequential exploratory strategy based on mixed-methods, aiming at analyzing the SMartyCheck feasibility throughout qualitative, then quantitative studies. The results obtained with such empirical studies allowed providing initial evidence improving SMartyCheck corroborating the relevance of the technique quality in the academic environment. Therefore, we provide an initial body of knowledge for planning prospective studies in industrial sets, as well as the automation of SMartyCheck.

Size, Coupling and Cohesion Metrics for Product-Line Architecture Evaluation: Proposal and Experimental Validation

Software Product Line (SPL) is an approach for de facto reusing of software artifacts for a given domain. Amongst the artifacts developed in the context of SPL is the Product-Line Architecture (PLA). It is one of the central artifacts of the SPL core assets responsible for abstracting a common architecture for specific products. Organizations should continuously evaluate the quality of their products by managing their PLA evolution and variabilities. Thus, the PLA evaluation should be taken into consideration as one of the most important activities throughout a SPL life cycle. Existing literature presents different PLA evaluation methods, from which metrics are most used. Thus, metrics allow different PLA quality attributes to be prioritized when deriving existing products, most of the time by trading-off them. Size, Coupling and Cohesion are examples of important attributes related to Maintainability from ISO/IEC 25010. Metrics for size, coupling and cohesion have successfully been applied in SPL, however, not taking into account commonalities and variabilities. Therefore, this paper proposes metrics for measuring Size, Coupling and Cohesion of PLA, as well as their experimental validations. Such validations are performed correlating the values collected for each metric to participants rating for each quality attribute. Results indicate a weak positive correlation for the size and coupling metrics and a weak negative correlation for the Cohesion metric. In view of the presented evidence, new studies and/or investigations must be carried out to make results generalizable.

A abordagem de Linha de Produto de Software (LPS) permite a reutilização de artefatos de software por meio da atividade de gerenciamento de variabilidades (GV), que gerencia os artefatos variantes de uma linha. Para apoiar o gerenciamento efetivo, abordagens são adotadas. Stereotype-based Management of Variability (SMarty) e uma abordagem de GV baseada em UML, e assim como as demais abordagens existentes, carecem de evidencias de sua efetividade para que possam ser aplicadas em âmbito acadêmico e industrial. Este artigo apresenta a extensao de SMarty para a identificação de variabilidades em modelos de sequencia da UML, bem como a realização de um conjunto de estudos experimentais que avaliam a efetividade de SMarty em comparação com outras abordagens significativas da literatura atual. Os resultados eviden-ciam que SMarty se mostra efetiva para gerir variabilidades, aumentando o n ́ıvel de qualidade e garantia de derivação de produtos específicos em LPSs.
