This study describes a citation analysis conducted on publications in Clinical Laboratory Science from 2010-2014. References were gathered and sorted according to format and publication date; for references to journal articles, the journal title was also recorded. At 71.0%, the journal article was found to be the most frequently cited format. Over 54% of the references were five years old or less, and over 91% were from the last two decades. A total of 815 unique journal titles were cited. The 22 most frequently cited journals provided approximately one-third of the references, while over 85% of the journals were cited three times or less. The most frequently cited journals were drawn from general medicine, pathology/laboratory medicine, the preclinical sciences, and general science. Results of the study can be used by faculty, students, practitioners, and researchers to support scholarship and research, and to advance the long-term goals of the profession.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1. Discuss the application of Evidence Based Practice (EBP) in each phase of laboratory testing: preanalytic, analytic, post analytic. 2. Describe and distinguish between EBP in MLS student curriculum and clinical laboratories. 3. Describe the efficacy of clinical research for quality improvement in clinical laboratories. 4. Evaluate quality assurance problems and projects encountered in the clinical laboratory for classroom teaching and adaptation to clinical research projects ABSTRACT: Evidence based practice (EBP) can be incorporated into the curriculum of Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Programs. Current components of curriculum can include EBP in pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic topics. Discussion of EBP topics in the classroom using practices assessed through the Laboratory Medicine Best Practices Initiative (LMBP TM) of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will give students a clear understanding of EBP and how it is used in the clinical laboratory for improved health care quality. Student involvement in Quality Improvement projects to improve laboratory performance and patient outcomes can be developed through capstone projects. Examples of clinical projects and application of EBP into the MLS curriculum are discussed.

Background Medical laboratory science (MLS) professionals play a crucial role in health care teams. However, research culture in the profession has not been well developed or studied. It is necessary to characterize attitudes toward research and scholarly activities among MLS professionals and identify ways to promote research in the profession. Methods A cross-sectional survey was administered through American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science channels. Survey responses were summarized using descriptive statistics, and linear regression models were constructed to identify characteristics that predicted 2 research attitudes: “valuing the role of research” and “perceived research environment” in the profession. Results Of the 116 MLS professionals in this study, 53% reported currently participating in research activities. Opinions toward research were generally positive, although many respondents were not currently conducting research. Individuals with education and research practice focuses tended to place greater value on research, and education level was a significant predictor of perceived research environment. Dedicated research time and mentorship were cited as effective ways for employers to promote research in MLS. Conclusion Overall, respondents had favorable attitudes toward research in MLS, but approximately half of participants noted a lack of incentives to conduct research. This study highlights several initiatives that may be effective for promoting increased research activity among MLS professionals.
