Evidence‐based guidelines for anti‐allergic drug withdrawal times before allergen‐specific intradermal and IgE serological tests in dogs

Abstract: Background -Anti-allergic drugs (e.g. antihistamines, glucocorticoids and ciclosporin) are often administered to dogs with atopic dermatitis to relieve pruritus and skin lesions. Allergen-specific intradermal tests (IDT) and allergen-specific IgE serological (ASIS) tests are used to characterize the allergens to which dogs are hypersensitive. Anti-allergic drugs have the potential to influence the results or interpretation of these tests. Objectives -To provide evidence-based recommendations for anti-allergic d… Show more

“…Optimal withdrawal times (OWT), which are defined as those associated with no drug interference, were used [17]. Because the OWT for antihistamines is 7 days, these findings indicate that the effects of antihistamines will disappear in that period of time.…”

“…The serum was separated by centrifugation and frozen at −20°C until two paired aliquots of the one sample were submitted by post to the two test laboratories. Anti‐inflammatory drug usage prior to sampling was recorded, but no attempt was made to withdraw topical or oral glucocorticoids or ciclosporin, in line with common practice, product literature from Laboratory A and recently published guidelines from an evidenced‐based systematic review …”

“…Before performing the IDT, the dogs receiving treatment had the administration interrupted in order to avoid possible interferences, according to Olivry et al (2013). Dogs were shaved in the lateral thoracic region with a number 40 razor blade.…”
