“…Previous reports have stated that in addition to the radicality of the operation, the DFI, size/number of metastases, and operation time were correlated significantly with OS [10,17,18]. Hofmann et al [10] reported that a group with a DFI \36 months and multiple metastases, regardless of complete resection, had a 21.5% 5-year survival rate (MS 35 months) and did worse than other groups undergoing complete resection.…”

“…Many reports have suggested that the role of pulmonary metastasectomy is important in a limited number of patients who are completely resected or who have a limited number of metastases [9][10][11]. A metastasectomy is recommended by the current Japanese Urological Association Guidelines only when the patient has good performance status and the metastasis can be resected completely [17]. Until now, although several Japanese studies have reported on pulmonary metastasectomy in patients with RCC, the reported selection criteria for metastasectomy in patients with RCC has varied among the studies and has not been evaluated in a randomized, prospective trial.…”

“…Since the approval for use on RCC by the Ministry of Health in 1987, IFN‐α, in particular the natural type, has been widely used in Japan, and IFN‐α monotherapy for advanced RCC was recommended as grade A in the clinical practice guidelines for the management of RCC, compiled by JUA (2007 edition) 8 . However, the response rate and survival benefit achieved by this cytokine are only 6–15% and 3–5 months respectively, which are not satisfactory levels 9 …”

“…Renal function-preserving surgery has recently been recommended as a treatment for small renal cancer [13]. Percutaneous cryoablation therapy, which includes thermal ablation, for humans was initially reported by Uchida [4].…”
