Evidence and presumption in PD diagnostics

Abstract: A general outline of the development of PD diagnostics is given with emphasis on problems of the validity of underlying models and the interpretation of results, because PD diagnostics is hardly ever direct and instead rests on a chain of inferences. Some major classical approaches are reviewed in this context, with a discussion of certain problems that also are significant for modern approaches. After a discussion of primary PD events and resulting degradation, some basic matters regarding measurement and tes… Show more

“…Partial Discharge (PD) measurements, an established flaw detection technique, provide means for assessing the integrity of insulation systems. Researchers and practitioners have long exploited the diversity in measurement techniques as well as interpretation of the recorded PD data [1][2][3][4][5] to monitor the performance of power transformer: both offline and in real time.…”

“…The characteristics of IDs and PD detection techniques were particularly studied in the last forty years [5][6][7][8][9]. Special emphasis has been given in the last 15 or so years in the development of PD detection techniques by using Pulse Height Analysis as well as Phase Resolved Measurement techniques [16]. Efforts have been made in the course of years to relate PD magnitude, energy and other parameters to insulation damage [14,15].…”

“…Portanto, a simples operação do circuito equivalente não corresponde, necessariamente, a gama de processos físicos que se desenvolvem em um sistema físico real (KELEN et al, 1995;McALLISTER, 1997;PEDERSEN et al, 1991). Buscando-se uma representação mais próxima do real, outros modelos têm sido propostos.…”
