This paper focuses on the topic of “everyday life” as it is addressed in Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) research. It starts from the argument that while human daily life with social robots has been increasingly discussed and studied in HRI, the concept of everyday life lacks clarity or systematic analysis, and it plays only a secondary role in supporting the study of the key HRI topics. In order to help conceptualise everyday life as a research theme in HRI in its own right, we provide an overview of the Social Science and Humanities (SSH) perspectives on everyday life and lived experiences, particularly in sociology, and identify the key elements that may serve to further develop and empirically study such a concept in HRI. We propose new angles of analysis that may help better explore unique aspects of human engagement with social robots. We look at the everyday not just as a reality as we know it (i.e., the realm of the “ordinary”) but also as the future that we need to envision and strive to materialise (i.e., the transformation that will take place through the “extraordinary” that comes with social robots). Finally, we argue that HRI research would benefit not only from engaging with a systematic conceptualisation but also critique of the contemporary everyday life with social robots. This is how HRI studies could play an important role in challenging the current ways of understanding of what makes different aspects of the human world “natural” and ultimately help bringing a social change towards what we consider a “good life.”

Iako je robotika višedisciplinarno područje koje posljednjih desetak godina sve više zalazi i u područje obrazovanja, njena primjena u osnovnim školama još uvijek u povojima. U ovom radu je provedeno istraživanje s ciljem rasvjetljavanja problematike upotrebe robotike unutar nastavnog predmeta Informatike te analize stupnja zainteresiranosti učitelja za implementacijom LEGO WeDo 2.0 edukativnog programa u prve razrede osnovne škole. Istraživanje je provedeno među 70 učitelja i učiteljica nastavnog predmeta Informatika u osnovnim školama grada Zagreba. Istraživanje je provedeno kroz tri faze, a kao instrument istraživanja korišten je online anketni upitnik. Sudionici istraživanja su u prvom dijelu odgovorili na upitnik, a potom im je prezentirano LEGO WeDo 2.0 programsko sučelje i Prijedlog nastavnog programa robotike za učenike prvog razreda osnovne škole te način implementacije u nastavni predmet Informatika. Drugi dio upitnika je proveden nakon prezentacije nakon koje su učitelji mogli procijeniti primjenu LEGO WeDo 2.0 u nastavi. Rezultati su pokazali kako su se osobni stavovi o primjeni robotike u nastavi promijenili nakon prezentacije. Učitelji su pokazali visoku razinu spremnosti na implementaciju i korištenje LEGO WeDo edukativnog programa u nastavnom sadržaju za prve razrede osnovne škole. Kao najveće prednosti edukativnog programa prepoznali su podizanje digitalne i informatičke pismenosti kod učenika, poticanje kritičkog razmišljanja i zanimanja za STEM discipline, a najveće ograničenje vide u visokim troškovima nabave robotskih setova.

This article considers the suitability of current robots designed to assist humans in accomplishing their daily domestic tasks. With several million units sold worldwide, robotic vacuum cleaners are currently the figurehead in this field. As such, we will use them to investigate the following key question: Could a robot possibly replace the hand-operated vacuum cleaner? One must consider not just how well a robot accomplishes its task, but also how well it integrates inside the user's space and perception. We took a holistic approach to addressing these topics by combining two studies in order to build a common ground. In the first of these studies, we analyzed a sample of seven robots to identify the influence of key technologies, like the navigation system, on performance. In the second study, we conducted an ethnographic study within nine households to identify users' needs. This innovative approach enables us to recommend a number of concrete improvements aimed at fulfilling users' needs by leveraging current technologies to reach new possibilities.
