Everyday and prospective memory deficits in ecstasy/polydrug users

Abstract: The impact of ecstasy/polydrug use on real-world memory (i.e. everyday memory, cognitive failures and prospective memory [PM]) was investigated in a sample of 42 ecstasy/polydrug users and 31 non-ecstasy users. Laboratory-based PM tasks were administered along with self-reported measures of PM to test whether any ecstasy/polydrug-related impairment on the different aspects of PM was present. Self-reported measures of everyday memory and cognitive failures were also administered. Ecstasy/polydrug associated def… Show more

“…62 It is unclear whether prospective memory deficits are specifically related to CNS effects of HIV infection or whether they are explained by other factors such as concomitant alcohol and drug use. 63 When comparing memory performance between seropositive and seronegative individuals, it is often difficult to control for the plethora of factors that can influence memory performance. These include common issues like sleep disturbance and/or use of sleep medications, fatigue, nutritional issues, and previous head injury.…”

“…The psychometric properties and construct validity of the EMQ have been extensively studied in healthy [59] and clinical populations [61][62][63]. Additionally the EMQ has been employed in studies with cannabis users [64], ecstasy and poly-drug/alcohol users [65] and the measure has demonstrated sensitivity to differential use of alcohol [66].…”

“…This will also allow for the increasing prevalence of polysubstance use to be addressed more effectively. For example, while less than half of Fisk et al's (2005) ecstasy users were also using cocaine, the increased use of this drug among young adult recreational users has meant that it is not unusual to find that up to cannabis (e.g., Hadjiefthyvoulou et al 2011).…”
