Everting suture correction of lower lid involutional entropion

Abstract: Results-When compared with the nonentropic side, the entropic lid had a greater degree of horizontal laxity and poorer lower lid retractor function. These diVerences however, were not significant. At the conclusion of the study and after a mean follow up period of 31 months, the entropion had recurred in 15% of the patients. There were no treatment failures in the group of five patients with recurrent entropion. The improvement in lower lid retractor function after the insertion of lower lid everting sutures d… Show more

“…Quickert and Rathbun [12] described placing full-thickness eyelid sutures beginning just below the tarsal plate on the conjunctival surface and exiting the skin in the same horizontal plane. Wright et al [13] suggested that after a mean follow-up period of 31 months using the everting suture technique, entropion had recurred in 15% of patients and that there were no failures after retreatment in the group of 5 patients with recurrent entropion. Corin et al [14] described a modification of the lateral tarsal strip procedure with resection of the orbicularis muscle for entropion repair.…”

“…The technique used was essentially the same as described by Wright et al, 4 with substitution of vicryl for catgut (which is no longer available in the UK). Three double-ended 4/0 vicryl sutures were used.…”

“…ES is a low cost and simple method that is reproducible in the hands of operators with different surgical experience. 4 It can be provided in the outpatient clinic on patients' first visit and does not require stopping antiplatelet medication. Allowing appropriately trained ophthalmic nurses to deliver this service could reduce costs provided safety and efficacy can be demonstrated and patients informed of alternatives to permit informed consent.…”

“…In these cases, the application of the liquid bandage is also a good option for treatment. Quickert everting sutures, which plicate the attenuated lid retractors and transfer their pull to the anterior surface of the tarsal plate, are also an alternative for debilitated patients (16)(17)(18) . Although it is a simple procedure, it is not as easy as the application of the liquid bandage and requires hospitalization to be performed.…”
