Event-related Potentials and Their Applications

Abstract: Event-related potentials (ERPs) are characterised as brain voltage fluctuations associated in time with some physical or mental occurrence and represent a non-invasive technique reflecting activity of complex neuronal networks responsible for new stimuli detection and discriminative behaviour of individuals. ERPs are measured using electroencephalography and their applications became widespread since 1960s of the last century. This review brings introduction into the ERPs technique and characteristics of the i… Show more

“…Event-Related Potential (ERP) is derived from the electroencephalogram (EEG) measurement of brain response. An ERP is used to measure the voltage change results of attentive and inattentive behaviour during the experiment [38]. Figure 16 shows a plot of grand-average ERP waveform.…”

“…Panel B in Figure 8 shows the P gain calculated with equation (6) and depicts the gain (or loss) of the electrode sets selected with our methodology (described in II-F2) versus that of the standard electrode configurations currently used. As we mentioned above, positive values indicate that the accuracy of the BLDA classifier achieved with the maxAUC method was better than that of the standard electrode configurations.…”

“…For example, changes in ERPs are used as measures for diagnosing neurological and psychiatric diseases. ERPs are also employed in the study of emotions, attention, cognitive processes and personality traits [6]. However, retrieving information from ERPs remains challenging due to the small differences between an ERP and neural background activity.…”

“…One way to distinguish between different kinds of ERP components is by the timing of their occurrence, which splits them into two classes (Landa, Krpoun, Kolarova, & Kasparek, 2014). Early wave ERPs normally peak within the first 200 milliseconds following stimulus onset and represent "sensory" or "exogenous" filtering (sensitive to the physical nature of the stimulus).…”

“…Within early and late ERPs, waveforms can be further differentiated based on polarity (positive [P] or negative [N]), scalp distribution, and response to task manipulation (Landa et al, 2014). A standard, operational definition conceptualized by Donchin, Ritter, and McCallum (1978), and revised by S. Luck (2014) is as follows:…”
