Event-Related Potentials and the Prediction of Differential Drug Response in Psychiatry

Abstract: Differences in physiological trait or state characteristics of the organism are ultimately responsible for the wide range of interindividual variability in the clinical response to psychoactive drugs. Event-related potentials (ERPs) appear especially valuable in assessing these physiological characteristics, and might therefore be useful as predictors of the individual drug response. Seven criteria for the selection of potential predictor variables are presented. A review of the literature reveals consistent, … Show more

“…Consistent with these findings, augmenters of the ERPs tend to be high sensation seekers, and reducers tend to be sensation avoiders 13 16 17 24 25 26 27 . Augmenting of the auditory N1/P2 amplitude has been suggested to reflect low central serotonergic neurotransmission, and vice versa 15 , a finding which appears in line with observations that responders to antidepressant or prophylactic medication are augmenters, whereas non-responders tend to be reducers 14 15 28 29 .…”

“…Following the basic work by Buchsbaum et al [6], several studies found that patients with bipolar affective dis-orders (BAD) show a pronounced augmenting disposition in comparison to healthy controls. Another finding is that responders to antidepressant or prophylactic medication are augmenters, whereas nonresponders tend to be reducers [7,8]. With regard to unipolar depression (UPD), Buchsbaum's findings suggest that these patients exhibit a significantly lower intensity dependence than did BAD patients and healthy controls, thereby showing themselves to be reducers [9].…”

“…V O l 3 . 1996 reported that patients with a strong intensity dependence of sensory evoked potentials are responders to acute antidepressive or antimanic lithium therapy (for review see Hegerl and Herrmann, 1990). We found that patients with affective psychoses responding to preventive lithium medication were also characterized by a strong intensity dependence of AEP (Hegerl et al, 1987).…”
