Event-based failure prediction in distributed business processes

Abstract: Traditionally, research in Business Process Management has put a strong focus on centralized and intra-organizational processes. However, today's business processes are increasingly distributed, deviating from a centralized layout, and therefore calling for novel methodologies of detecting and responding to unforeseen events, such as errors occurring during process runtime. In this article, we demonstrate how to employ event-based failure prediction in business processes. This approach allows to make use of th… Show more

“…Since public collaboration processes cannot be available at present [28], in [21], we build a case set that contains 30 diverse and practical collaboration processes from available resources such as research papers (e.g., [6-8, 10, 11, 29]) and other online materials (e.g., the official website of BPMN). Additionally, based on the 7PMG guideline [30], we also confirm that these cases are reasonable for our experiments, as each collaboration process in the case set contains approximately 50 activities and this is roughly consistent with the tasks involved in the actual process.…”

“…Currently, there are no public collaborative business processes available for experiments [27]. Yet, in order to evaluate the analytical effectiveness of our approach more generally, we choose 60 real-world cases (such as a booking system, a risk management process, and an emergency management system) from existing research papers and the BPMN case base (http://www.bpmn.org/) for experiments.…”
