Event-based Access to Historical Italian War Memoirs

Abstract: The progressive digitization of historical archives provides new, often domain-specific, textual resources that report on facts and events that have happened in the past; among these, memoirs are a very common type of primary source. In this article, we present an approach for extracting information from Italian historical war memoirs and turning it into structured knowledge. This is based on the semantic notions of events, participants, and roles. We evaluate quantitatively each of the key steps of our approa… Show more

“…Using word embeddings for studying change in historical corpora was introduced by Hamilton et al [17] and Eger and Mehler [10]: however, while their contribution is on determining statistical laws of semantic change in diachronic word embeddings, we focus here instead on whether changes in bias measurements from dense and sparse embeddings align against known historical changes. Despite their enormous popularity, there exist alternatives to word embeddings as methodology to analyze historical corpora, including topic modeling [2], [35] and event extraction [31].…”

“…Нарастващата дигитализация на исторически архиви предоставя нови, често специфични за дадена област, текстови ресурси, които отчитат факти и събития, които са се случили в миналото -сред тях мемоарите са много често срещан тип първоизточник. Основавайки се на семантичното представяне на събития, участници и роли, в (Rovera et al, 2021) се представя подход за извличане на информация от италианските исторически военни мемоари и превръщането ѝ в структурирано знание.…”

“…The digitization of newspapers has greatly improved accessibility and clearly changed the nature of historical research, by enabling easier data access and analysis at scale through multilingual semantic data enrichment [7,42,10,6]. Through better document analysis results and semantic enrichment e.g., named entity recognition (NER), relation extraction (RE), event extraction (EE), the quality of the newspaper data offered by the libraries to its users is substantially improved [12,14,13,15].…”
