Even Einstein struggled: Effects of learning about great scientists’ struggles on high school students’ motivation to learn science.

Abstract: Students’ beliefs that success in science depends on exceptional talent negatively impact their motivation to learn. For example, such beliefs have been shown to be a major factor steering students away from taking science and math courses in high school and college. In the present study, we tested a novel story-based instruction that models how scientists achieve through failures and struggles. We designed this instruction to challenge this belief, thereby improving science learning in classroom settings. A d… Show more

“…In addition to social circumstances to facilitate respect for others, a reward and punishment strategy is implicit, because learners want to learn as a result of encouragement and to avoid punishment (Alwan & Atteat, 2010) The internal motivation, as defined by Bencsik, Mechova & Hevesi (2016), is done by the individual himself without any external encouragements. Lin-Siegler, Ahn, Chen, Fang & Luna-Lucero (2016) views it as the individual wish to perform a job in the job itself, the source of this type of motivation is the individual himself. We notice that individuals learn best when they are eager to learn when interested and feel comfortable while during the learning process (Vibulphol, 2016).…”

“…If iconic figures in history experienced these difficulties and were discouraged and frustrated at times, it is reasonable for a middle school student to experience the same difficulties. This knowledge can encourage students to persist rather than quitting after the first failure that they experience (Lin-Siegler & Ahn, 2016). This affirmation, in itself, was one of the more significant outcomes.…”

“…Students and young researchers are often heartened to learn that physics is hard work and that it is okay for their own efforts not to look like a textbook presentation. 4 Messiness is the standard. Mistakes are normal.…”
