Variation and uncertainty in estimated evaporation was determined over time and between two locations in Florida Bay, a subtropical estuary. Meteorological data was collected from September 2001 to August 2002 at Rabbit Key and Butternut Key within the bay.Evaporation was estimated using both vapor-flux and energy-budget based methods. The results were then placed into a long-term temporal context using 33 years of temperature and rainfall data collected in south Florida. Evaporation also was estimated from this long-term data using an empirical formula relating evaporation to clear sky solar radiation and air temperature.Evaporation estimates for the 12 month period ranged from 144 to 175 cm yr -1 , depending on location and method, with an average of 163 cm yr -1 ("9%). Monthly values ranged from 9.2 cm to 18.5 cm, with the highest value observed in May, corresponding with the maximum in measured net radiation. Uncertainty estimates derived from measurement errors in the data were as much as 10%, and were large enough to obscure differences in evaporation between the two sites. Differences among all estimates for any month indicate the overall uncertainty in monthly evaporation, and ranged from 9% to 26%. Over a 33-year period (1970 -2002), estimated annual evaporation from Florida Bay ranged from 148 to 181 cm yr -1 , with an average of 166 cm yr -1 . Rainfall was consistently lower in Florida Bay than evaporation, with a long-term average of 106 cm yr -1 Rainfall considered alone was uncorrelated with evaporation at both monthly and annual time scales; however, when the seasonal variation in clear sky radiation also was taken into account both net radiation and evaporation were significantly suppressed in months with high rainfall.

1We constructed a survey system of radon/methane/nitrate/salinity to find sites of 2 submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and groundwater nitrate input. We deployed 3 the system in Waquoit Bay and Boston Harbor, MA where we derived SGD rates using a 4 mass balance of radon with methane serving as a fine resolution qualitative indicator of 5 groundwater. In Waquoit Bay we identified several locations of enhanced groundwater 6 discharge, out of which two (Childs and Quashnet Rivers) were studied in more detail. 7The Childs River was characterized by high nitrate input via groundwater discharge, 8 while the Quashnet River SGD was notable but not a significant source of nitrate. Our 9 radon survey of Boston Harbor revealed several sites with significant SGD, out of these 10Inner Harbor and parts of Dorchester Bay and Quincy Bay had groundwater fluxes 11 accompanied by significant water column nitrogen concentrations. The survey system 12 has proven effective in revealing areas of SGD and non-point source pollution. 13 14

Lacaziosis (lobomycosis; Lacazia loboi) is a fungal skin disease that naturally occurs only in humans and dolphins. The first reported case of lacaziosis in a bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus occurred in 1970 in Sarasota Bay, Florida, USA, and subsequent photo-ID monitoring of the Sarasota Bay dolphin population has revealed persistence of the disease. The objectives of this study were to estimate lacaziosis prevalence (P) in 2 bottlenose dolphin populations on the west coast of Florida (Sarasota Bay and Charlotte Harbor) and compare disease occurrence to other published estimates of lacaziosis in dolphin populations across the globe. Historic photographic records of dolphins captured and released for health assessment purposes (Sarasota Bay) and photo-ID studies (Charlotte Harbor) were screened for evidence of lesions consistent with lacaziosis. Health assessment data revealed a prevalence of lacaziosis in the Sarasota Bay bottlenose dolphin population between 2 and 3%, and analyses of photo-ID data provided a lacaziosis-like prevalence estimate of 2% for Charlotte Harbor dolphins. With the exception of lacaziosis prevalence estimates for dolphins inhabiting the Indian River Lagoon (P = 0.068; P = 0.12), no statistically significant differences were seen among Sarasota Bay, Charlotte Harbor, and other published estimates. Although lacaziosis is a rare disease among these dolphin populations, studies that assess disease burden among different populations can assist with the surveillance of this zoonotic pathogen.
