“…A distinction must be made between patients with AIH occurring 'de novo' during pregnancy and presumably being caused by it [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17], and patients with known AIH who become preg nant [10,16,[18][19][20][21][22], The serological abnor malities in all our cases were discovered dur ing pregnancy; in 6 of them no autoanti bodies had been detected earlier in the preg nancy (although in one, D.M., a viral infec tion during pregnancy could have stimu lated the AIH), and in a further 5 patients there were no detectable autoantibodies when tested prior to the pregnancy in ques tion (table I). The possibility that the asso ciation is mere coincidence is most unlikely as our figures suggest that AIH occurs at least four times more frequently during preg nancy since in the non-pregnant female pop ulation of the same age range (16-40 years) the incidence of AIH was 0.4 per 100,000.…”
