Macrophytes represent a functional compartment that plays multiple and fundamental ecological roles in aquatic environments. They are linked with the other compartments of hydrosystems, both abiotic and biotic, which gives them the ability to integrate environmental conditions and reflect the trophic state of watercourses.Nevertheless, macrophytes in Moroccan rivers have been rarely studied. Thus, the main objective of the present work is to study these plants by determining the environmental factors that control their presence and distribution in the watercourses of the upper Oum Er-rbia basin (Middle Atlas Morocco). From June 2018 to June 2019, 14 sites spread over five rivers were monitored monthly to describe macrophytic communities and investigate their ecological determinism. We used a principal component analysis to establish each river's typology and a detrended correspondence analysis to explore macrophyte assemblages. Canonical correspondence analysis was used to determine the hydrochemical parameters of water that govern the development and distribution of macrophyte species in the upper Oum Er-rbia basin. The Amengous river stands out from the other surveyed rivers for its exceptional richness of macrophytic species. This richness is often associated with the enrichment of the aquatic environment by nitrogen and phosphate inputs. Furthermore, in some rivers, such as Oum Er-rbia, nutrient enrichment plays a secondary function in comparison to the hydromorphological descriptors that tend to be more important for macrophyte composition and distribution.

RÉSUMÉLe protocole MEV, en premier essai dans des secteurs régulés, s'avère être pertinent.La structure de la végétation aquatique rend compte des perturbations liées au mode de gestion du barrage EDF de Rophémel. Les pollutions à l'amont, liées à des problèmes de qualité chimique de l'eau, sont également repérées par les modifications des communautés.Les indices biologiques macrophytiques rendent compte des modifications saisonnières liées à l'étiage estival. Dans le contexte très anthropisé de la Rance, leur possibilité d'usage reste limitée.Des croissances proliférantes des végétaux sont observées à l'étiage. Les secteurs repérés comme perturbés sont les plus affectés. Ces déséquilibres de structure des communautés végétales et leurs variations saisonnières contribuent à la compréhension du fonctionnement en rivière.Les perspectives d'amélioration de ces indices passent par un approfondissement analytique et conceptuel. Une expérimentation in situ, en se servant des particularités des milieux régulés, est envisagée pour le perfectionnement du suivi hydrobiologique des rivières. ABSTRACTMacrophytes of the River Rance were studied according to the sampling methods of the French Water Agencies (« protocole MEV») : survey of 50 m length stations along the river gradient ; the sectorisation of the river was done considering abiotic factors such as drainage order, slope, geology and pollution points.Spatio-temporal variations of the floristic communities were described through species richness, diversity and evenness indexes, macrophyte index and cover of the types and the biological groups.For its first application in regulated parts, MEV protocol gave quite a good result. Great macrophytes cover was observed at the low water level of the end of the summer. Perturbed parts were more affected. The balance between community structures gave a functional indication of the River Rance.The comparison of seasonal variations occurs to be a way of study of the biological response to perturbation. According to the great response of the vegetation downstream from the dam, perspectives are proposed in using regulated parts of the river as an in situ experimental tool to increase the understanding of ecological mechanisms.

Macrophytes were studied downstream of the Rophémel hydroelectric dam on the River Rance (Côtes d’Armor Department, western France) to assess the effects of hydroelectric functioning on river macrophyte communities. We studied ten representative sections of the hydro-peaking channel on five occasions in 1995 and 1996, on a 15-km stretch of river. Floristic surveys were carried out on sections 50 m in length, and genera of macroalgae, species of bryophyta, hydrophytes, and emergent rhizophytes were identified. For the aquatic bryophytes and spermatophytes section of our study, we compared our results with 19th century floristic surveys, before the dam was built. During the vegetative growth period, the hydro-peaking frequency was low. The plant richness was highest near the dam. The macrophyte communities were highly modified according to the distance to the dam. The frequency and magnitude of hydro-peaking was related to the aquatic macrophyte richness in an Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis position. However, the results of the eco-historical comparison with 19th century floristic surveys point to the original nature of the flora found at the site. Some floral patterns, seen during both periods and at an interval of 133 years, were indicative of the ubiquity of the aquatic flora and of the plants’ adaptability. This demonstrates the importance of taking river basin history into account in such biological surveys.
