Evaluation of water sorption behavior and in vitro blood compatibility of polyvinyl alcohol based magnetic bionanocomposites

Abstract: In recent past magnetic bionanocomposites have shown potential in biomedical applications mainly due to their superparamagnetic and biocompatible nature. They have also established themselves as a promising class of hybrid organic-inorganic materials derived from polymers and organic/inorganic fillers. In this study biocompatible nanocomposites were prepared by in situ synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles within the polyvinyl alcohol-grafted-polymethyl methacrylate hydrogels and characterized by techniques such… Show more

“…Application potential for superparamagnetic nanocomposites was found as microwave absorbing material [ 64 ]. Very recent and advanced developments of organic coated magnetic nanoparticles show application potential mainly in biology, medicine, in biomedicine [ 54 , 159 , 160 , 161 , 162 ], and diagnostics, such as contrast agent for MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) [ 163 , 164 ], in cancer treatment by local hyperthermia [ 165 , 166 , 167 ], as drug carriers [ 168 , 169 , 170 ] or as biocompatible ferromagnetic fluid [ 53 , 171 ].…”

“…Fluorescent, stable aqueous ZnOat Polymer core/shell nanoparticles exhibit a high potential for application as fluorescent probes in vitro , as they are almost nontoxic for human cells [ 139 ]. Finally, as already shown in section 6.2 ., there is a huge application potential for superparamagnetic nanocomposites in the field of biology, medicine, diagnostics and therapy [ 53 , 54 , 159 , 160 , 161 , 162 , 163 , 164 , 165 , 166 , 167 , 168 , 169 , 170 , 171 ].…”

“…Preparation and magnetic properties of silica coated nanoparticles were studied by Mazaleyrat et al [6], synthesis and size-modulation of silica coated maghemite nanoparticles were described by Almeida et al [7]. Characterization of magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 )/polyvinyl alcohol-based nanocomposites and study of their in vitro blood compatibility were published by Bajpai et al [8,9]. Amino acid-coated magnetic nanoparticles which might be applied to cell separation, diagnosis and targeted drug delivery for cancer therapy were investigated by Durmus et al [10].…”

“…1 and 2, the ferrogels are observed to exhibit characteristics of soft magnetic materials. PVA hydrogel matrices are known to exhibit diamagnetic behaviour while CI is a magnetically soft material [10,14]. The magnetically soft behaviour of the studied systems arises from the presence of CI particles within the hydrogel matrices.…”
