Evaluation of Water Quality and Plankton for Mahmoudia Canal in Northern West of Egypt

Abstract: Water quality describes the condition of the water, including chemical, physical, and biological characteristics, usually with regarding to its suitability for a particular purpose. The present study describes the environmental conditions of Mahmoudia canal which are the main water source for Alexandria and Behiera governorates. Water samples were collected from ten sites along the Mahmoudia canal in the year 2018 for study the seasonal variations of the water quality parameters (physicochemical and biological… Show more

“…This could be due to the decreased rate of decomposition of organic matter at low temperature and low metabolic activity of aquatic organisms (25). The chemical oxygen demand (COD) is usually regarded an indicator for determining the level of water pollution (6). The WHO sets the permissible limit for COD as 40mg/l (21).…”

“…Chloride and fluoride had higher concentrations in winter compared to summer recording a variation from 16 to 37mg/l for (Cl -) and 0.35 to 0.6 mg/l for (F -). According to El-Feky et al (6), the rates of anions and cations in water differ naturally depending on climatic and geographic conditions.…”

“…Water quality analysis is used to describe the environmental condition of any water body (El-Feky et al, 2018;Ashour et al, 2018;El Raey and Abo-Taleb, 2019). The change in water quality affects all aquatic organisms; from microorganisms to large creatures (AboTaleb, 2019).One of the most important methods in water quality determination is a heavy metal analysis.…”

“…Plankton have direct and indirect impact on the fisheries' healthiness as they are considered a direct food for some planktivorous fish [43,44] or because phytoplankton and zooplankton development (plankton-rich water) leads to the flourishment of the fouling community.…”
