Water security is a very important purpose facing the world in the last decay as one of the main consequences related to the risks of climate change. Water quality of Litani River's at Quaraoun Lake station in Lebanon was evaluated by measuring various physicochemical parameters between 2008 and 2018. Samples were performed and analyzed the first of every month. Different analytical methods were used to determine the values of 11 physico-chemical parameters. Different statistical methods, such as Principal Component Analysis and the Times Series Representation, were applied to the results to evaluate the water characteristics, determine the operation of the ecosystem and study the correlation between the different parameters in the Quaraoun station. Industrial, agricultural and sewage water pollution of the Litani River were demonstrated by the high concentration of sulfate, phosphate and ammonia. High bacterial activity was proved from the high decreasing of the dissolved oxygen. Important correlations between the different parameters and between the parameters of the ecosystem and the weather were proved.

High-quality evaluation of city sustainability is an important part of city policy making and development. In this paper, we evaluated the sustainability of the 14 cities in Liaoning, China, from 2015 to 2017. Based on the comprehensive consideration of the interactions among the social, economic and environmental systems, the traditional evaluation indicator system is refined. We incorporate the attitude of decision makers into the evaluation model and propose an objective weighting method by considering data distribution to objectively guide the cities to develop towards the established goals. The empirical research results show that cities located in eastern Liaoning performed the best and in western Liaoning performed the worst. The performances of the 14 cities in Liaoning were not perfect. Both the evaluation values and growth rates of 7 cities (accounting for 50.00%) were lower than the overall average level. The evaluation values of the three systems of the 14 cities were not balanced. The evaluation values of the social, economic and environmental systems fluctuated within the range of [0.0159, 0.0346], [0.0151, 0.0677] and [0.0123, 0.0483], respectively. The social and economic systems of most cities supplied more for the environmental system than for the other system. Cities with higher environmental base rankings offered less supply to other systems. At the same time, we also provide some individualized and concrete suggestions for the guidance of city sustainable development. By comparing the empirical data with the reality, it confirms the credibility of the method and the recommendations in this paper.

Suitability evaluation of urban construction land is critical for both urban master planning and the proper utilization of land resources. Using the Beihu New District of Jining City, China, as a case study, this paper introduces a novel research approach for comprehensive suitability evaluation based on vertical-horizontal processes. First, by considering both the land development potential and ecological constraint resistance, the potential-resistance (PR) model was developed and used to analyze the suitability for urban construction of vertical processes. Then, given the results of the vertical suitability analysis, the current urban built-up areas were selected as the sources of urban expansion, and the minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model was applied to evaluate the suitability for urban development in terms of horizontal processes. The study area was regionalized into four categories-priority, suitable, restricted, and prohibited areas-which were defined based on the development threshold. The results showed that restricted and prohibited areas for urban construction occupied most of the study area. Totally, 648.51 km 2 was categorized as restricted or prohibited, accounting for 12.89% and 54.75% of the total area, respectively. Priority and suitable areas for urban construction covered a total area of 310.37 km 2 , accounting for 16.55% and 15.81% of the total area, respectively. These areas were mainly distributed around urban centers and urban built-up areas. These findings reflect the substantial potential for future urban development and construction in the study area. The newly developed principles and methods of suitability evaluation for urban construction land presented in this paper provide more appropriate scales and spatial location for urban development and an ecological baseline for future urban growth.
