“…The NCI screening programme counts among its successes, the identification of paclitaxel from taxus brevifolia, which was originally included in a blind mass screening of plant extracts without recourse to the then available ethnobotanical information on its traditional use (Heinrich and Bremner, 2006). In our studies on Venezuelan plants, we initially began by selecting plants from databases of botanical collections and ethnobiological usage, testing 17 plants for antitumour activity (Taylor et al, 2006), but then adopted a more shotgun approach to a study of cytostatic and cytotoxic activity against tumour cell lines in 308 extracts. There were two reasons for this, the first, simply, that we had the capacity to do it, that is, test all the extracts then available to us.…”
