Evaluation of urodynamic procedures in female cats anesthetized with low and high doses of isoflurane and propofol

Abstract: The low-dose propofol regimen was the easiest to titrate and maintain and yielded diagnostic-quality detrusor reflexes in all 6 cats. Anesthetic depth should be titrated appropriately when performing urodynamic procedures.

“…Normal maximum detrusor pressures in cats range from 68 to 73 mmHg, depending on the level of sedation. 16,17 Urine leakage was observed at substantially lower pressures in case 3 of this study, raising concerns as to the safety of either leaving the Stamey catheter in place when allowing the bladder to fill to observe normal micturition or following acute withdrawal.…”

“…13 Briefly, an IV catheter was placed into a cephalic vein and a bolus (2 mg/kg) of propofol was administered, followed by a propofol CRI at 0.2 mg/kg/min. If this degree of anesthesia did not yield adequate sedation, the CRI was increased to a maximum of 0.3 mg/kg/min until the cat was adequately sedated and then decreased to 0.2 mg/kg/min for 15 minutes prior to initiation of the procedures.…”

“…All urodynamic procedures were performed by use of a commercially available system c as described elsewhere. 13 Briefly, once each cat had reached a stable plane of anesthesia, a 6F double-lumen urinary catheter d was aseptically placed into the urinary bladder through the urethra and the bladder was emptied. The catheter was then connected to a pressure transducer for continuous measurement of intravesical pressure.…”
