Evaluation of Transmission Losses of Various Battery Electric Vehicles

Abstract: Transmission losses in battery electric vehicles have compared to internal combustion engine powertrains a larger share in the total energy consumption and play therefore a major role. Furthermore, the power flows not only during propulsion through the transmissions, but also during recuperation, whereby efficiency improvements have a double effect. The investigation of transmission losses of electric vehicles thus plays a major role. In this paper, three simulation models of the Institute of Automotive Engine… Show more

“…Indeed, increasing the vehicle mass produces a higher energy consumption rate, thus lowering the traveling distance for the same available energy. The higher performance of the electric motor, which has lower energy transmission losses, compensates for this drawback, resulting in a driving range extension compared to the ICE cars [11][12][13]. 2 The longer driving distance, however, depends on the driving pattern, driver's attitude, and driving conditions.…”

“…The transaxle primarily comprises gears and rolling bearings (herein referred to as bearings). Because there is a high demand OPEN ACCESS EDITED BY Taisuke Maruyama, NSK Ltd., Japan for reducing friction losses in these components (Hengst et al, 2022), deep-groove ball bearings for EV eAxles should be designed to exhibit low friction-torque properties (Yokota, 2020). Additionally, because the rotational speed of eAxle motors continues to increase as the size and weight of the motors are reduced (Zhang et al, 2019), deep-groove ball bearings are required to be reliable at higher rotational speeds by circumventing excessive wear and seizures.…”
