Evaluation of traditional grain store buildings (hórreos) in Galicia (NW Spain): analysis of outdoor/indoor temperature and humidity relationships

Abstract: Hórreos are traditional rural buildings of northern Spain used for desiccation and conservation of cereal grains. They provide natural ventilation, an unfavourable environment to discourage attack by biotic agents (e.g., fungi and insects) and prevent access by others, such as rodents. The objective of this paper was to study the environmental conditions of the Mondoñedo type of hórreos (north coastal area of Galicia, northwestern Spain). They are built of wood and stone, with a prismatic grain chamber isolate… Show more

“…In addition to their adaptation to the local characteristics, serender is one of the significant examples that corresponds to the current energy-efficient building criteria. These structures consume zero energy within the context (Perez-Garcia et al, 2010). This evidence shows the adaptation of traditional buildings to the environment (Sözen and Gedik, 2007).…”

“…These structures at the same time are prestigious symbols of the richness of the region's culture. These types of granaries, which provide a local solution for rural denizens, can be seen in many parts of the world, including Norway, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Georgia, Portugal and Slovenia (Perez-Garcia et al 2010).…”

“…Hórreos were the solution to provide natural ventilation, while preventing access to unwanted rodents. They are typically built of timber, stone, or masonry with a grain chamber (warehouse box) elevated and isolated from the ground and with ventilation openings on the side walls (Perez-Garcia et al 2010). The Iberian granaries were mainly constructed in two different materials: stone and timber.…”
