Evaluation of Thiol Homeostasis in Multiple Sclerosis and Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorders

Abstract: Objectives: The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate dynamic thiol-disulfide homeostasis as a novel oxidative stress parameter in multiple sclerosis (MS), neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD), and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) to better understand the role of thiol homeostasis in neuroimmunological diseases. Methods: A total of 85 participants were included in this study, consisting of 18 healthy controls, 52 patients diagnosed with MS, seven with NMOSD, a… Show more

“…A combination of agents that modify the course of the disease and have various effects on immunity is used for treatment at different phases of the disease. 4,5 Vitamin plus interferon therapy and the use of medical cannabis have also been studied as methods of treatment in MS. 6,7 This disease leads to a widespread demyelination caused by selective involvement of oligodendrocytes and axonal loss. Additional psychobehavioral symptoms such as anxiety, dementia and depression are also observed.…”

“…However, the methods applied and the results are quite divergent and data concerning the ratio of thiols and disulfides are scarce. Nanomolar [ 21 ] and micromolar concentrations [ 22 , 23 ] of GSH in CSF have been reported. In some cases, the reduced form predominates in accordance with the high fraction of HMA.…”

“…Even though the presentation of the disease is mostly relapsing-remitting (85%), ~15% of it is progressive from the onset. Both oxidative stress and neuroinflammation play a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of MS. As a result of these pathological events, axonal damage is unavoidable in the end [ 2 , 3 ].…”
