Evaluation of the water sorption and controlled‐release potential of binary polymeric beads of starch and alginate loaded with potassium nitrate as an agrochemical

Abstract: Binary polymeric beads of sodium alginate and starch were prepared and characterized by IR spectral and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The beads were examined for water uptake potential, and he influence of various factors, including chemical composition of the macromolecular matrix, pH, ionic strength, and temperature of the swelling medium, were investigated on the degree of water sorption. The prepared beads were loaded with KNO 3 , as a model agrochemical, and the release kinetics of KNO 3 … Show more

“…Alginates and their derivatives are widely used in food and beverage industry, as thickening agents, gelling agents and colloidal stabilizers, in cosmetic, drug delivery (Babu, Sairam, Hosamani, & Aminabhavi, 2007;Pongjanyakul & Puttipipatkhachorn, 2007) and agriculture applications (Mishra, Bajpai, & Bajpai, 2004;Puoci et al, 2008a). In literature, many studies report on the use of alginate coatings in packaging technology to improve quality and shelf life of food (Lu, Liu, Ye, Wei, & Liu, 2009;Oms-Oliu, Soliva-Fortuny, & Martín-Belloso, 2008).…”

“…Alginates are linear anionic polysaccharides of (1, 4)-linked a-L-guluronate and b-D-mannuronic acid residues and are obtained mainly from brown algas belonging to the Phaeophyceae. Alginates and their derivatives are widely used in food, cosmetic, drug delivery (Babu, Sairam, Hosamani, & Aminabhavi, 2007;Pongjanyakul & Puttipipatkhachorn, 2007) and agriculture applications (Mishra, Bajpai, & Bajpai, 2004).…”

“…Ca-alginate has also been used to prepare alginate hydrogels and microbeads for drug delivery (Morch et al 2006). In addition, calcium alginate entrapped bacterial cells have been used in environmental remediation (Fundueanu et al 1999;Mishra & Bajpai 2004;Zala et al 2004;Pongjanyakul & Puttipipatkhachorn 2007;Hill & Khan 2008). Immobilization of cells in calcium alginate is a simple and cost effective technique (Zala et al 2004).…”
