Evaluation of the utility of the HemoCue 301 haemoglobinometer for blood donor screening

Abstract: HemoCue 301 provides a simple and reliable anaemia screen method, conforming to the requirements of CLIA'88 regulations; it is reliable for discriminating Hb values for donor acceptance. The main advantage is that the cuvettes are significantly cheaper than the previous models, and will not deteriorate in adverse climatic conditions.

“…Another advantage of measuring only WBC and haemoglobin is the speed, with a WBC achieved in minutes using the Hemocue WBC® (Osei-Bimpong et al , 2009) and the haemoglobin obtainable within a minute using the Hemocue Hb 301® (HemoCue AB, Angelholm, Sweden); the key advantage of such point-of-care testing is the rapid time from sampling to the result being involved in a clinical decision (Morris, 2007). …”

“…Therefore, there has been a rising demand to increase the diagnostic effectiveness of this test through appropriate screening (Pennycook, 1995; Miyakis et al , 2006; Hawkins, 2007). With the advent of point-of-care testing, there are a few devices that measure single primary parameters such as WBC or haemoglobin accurately by a minute capillary (finger prick) sample (Morris, 2007; Osei-Bimpong et al , 2009). Supporting such appropriate developments could represent opportunities for laboratory medicine to help influence the scope of future service delivery (Beastall, 2008).…”

“…A study by Morris et al55 evaluated the performance, reproducibility and accuracy of HemoCue 301+ (HemoCue AB, Angelholm, Sweden) for donor Hb measurement. The device is a modified version with cheaper reagent-free cuvettes, which are claimed to show no deterioration even in adverse climate.…”

“…The HgB levels of the children were measured using HemoCue® HB 301, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved device designed for quick analysis of HgB in capillary, venous, or arterial blood [38][39][40][41]. As recommended by the WHO for STH surveys, we conducted stool tests on samples from 12-months to 6-yearold children from the Berd region [42].…”
