Evaluation of the Use of Freeze‐dried Skin Allografts in the Treatment of Human Mucogingival Problems

Abstract: The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the clinical responses to freeze-dried skin allografts when used to correct mucogingival problems in humans. FDS was obtained by the NMRI Tissue Bank after processing by standard procedures. The recipient sites were prepared using the standard partial thickness dissection with apical periosteal separation. Rehydrated FDS was sutured into place to completely cover the recipient sites. Routine postoperative procedures were performed. Evaluations were made by mean… Show more

“…[10] The first case on the histologic study of freeze dried skin (FDS) allograft in the oral cavity was reported later in the 1980s. [11] Acellular dermal matrix is an aseptically prepared biocompatible graft material obtained from human donors by processing the dermis, removing the cells, and leaving behind a structurally intact connective tissue matrix composed of type I collagen.…”

“…25,29 Freeze-dried skin and FDDMA allografts are composed mainly of collagen and have been shown to be acceptable and beneficial when used intra-orally. 1,13,14,16,[42][43][44][45][46][47][48] of freeze-dried skin allograft as a biologic bandage covering surgically traumatized alveolar bone has demonstrated supracrestal cementogenesis and an increased amount of connective tissue attachment to the surgically exposed roots when compared with routine flap replacement.1 Additional advantages to the use of allogeneic freeze-dried skin or dura mater, or other freeze-dried soft tissues, are the availability of large amounts of donor tissue for multiple sites, the ease of storage in vacuum bottles at room temperature, and virtual absence of immunogenicity. [49][50][51] The objective of this study was to clinically compare the use of e-PTFE and freeze-dried dura mater allografts (FDDMA) as a biologic cover over Class II furcation osseous defects in mandibular molars.…”

“…La duramadre homóloga liofilizada, comercialmente disponible, también fue considerada un material de injerto libre para uso intraoral (30,31), pero mostraba marcada recidiva cuando se usaba para incrementar encía adherida (32). Por otra parte, los aloinjertos secos congelados de piel se emplearon para tratamientos de heridas por quemaduras durante varios años, antes de que fueran exitosamente aplicados al tratamiento de problemas mucogingivales (33)(34)(35).…”
