Evaluation of the use of audio‐enhanced personal digital assistants to survey Latino migrant farmworkers

Abstract: We describe the feasibility of audio-enhanced personal digital assistants (ADPAs) for data collection with 60 Latino migrant farmworkers. All participants chose to complete APDA surveys rather than using paper-and-pencil. No one left the study prematurely: two (3%) data cases were lost due to technical difficulties. Across all data .27% missing data were observed: nine missing responses on eight items. Participants took 19 minutes on average to complete the 58-question survey. The factor most influential for c… Show more

“…3 Here, audio-enhanced personal digital assistants, also known as PDAs, were used and evaluated for data quality with mostly non-English speaking participants. 8 Phase 2 of DINE included the development of the objectives and teaching strategies for phase 3’s health promotion teachings and pilot tested the use of audio-enhanced tablet computers to collect children’s food frequency data in a one group cross-sectional study. In phase 3 of DINE, the resulting culturally sensitive health promotion education on healthy eating was tested in a quasi-experimental intervention study.…”

“…All translated documents then need to be translated back into the original language, compared for differences, and corrections made. Survey questions with audio-enhanced voice files on tablets have demonstrated good data quality, and using voice files to ‘speak’ to participants decreases the number of bilingual research team members needed at data collection sites (Kilanowski & Trapl, 2010; Kilanowski, Trapl, & Kofron, 2013). Depending on the sensitivity of the data collected, an additional consideration with consent forms is obtaining a Certificate of Confidentiality (COC).…”
