Evaluation of the toxicities of silver and silver sulfide nanoparticles against Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative bacteria

Abstract: In this study, the endogenous lipid signalling molecules, N-myristoylethanolamine, were explored as a capping agent to synthesise stable silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and Ag sulphide NPs (Ag 2 S NPs). Sulphidation of the AgNPs abolishes the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) maximum of AgNPs at 415 nm with concomitant changes in the SPR, indicating the formation of Ag 2 S NPs. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the AgNPs and Ag 2 S NPs are spherical in shape with a size of 5-30 and 8-30 nm, respectivel… Show more

“…However, because of their photocatalytic properties, AgX NPs are unstable under visible light irradiation, which results in the decline of their antimicrobial behavior over time [ 144 ]. Antimicrobial activities have also been reported for other Ag-related NPs, such as Ag 2 S [ 145 ] and Ag 2 Se [ 146 ].…”

“…The extent of antibacterial activity exhibited by the Md-Lec-pCuS NPs complex was evaluated by dual staining using propidium iodide (PI) and acridine orange (AO). 28 Briey, cells were allowed to grow to mid-log phase in the presence of Md-Lec-pCuS NPs complex and then the cells were collected and washed twice with PBS buffer and resuspended in an equal volume of the buffer. AO/PI at a concentration of 0.5 mM was added to the bacterial culture.…”

“…Among these, the advantages of a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity make Ag the most studied and widely used metal-based antibacterial agent on Ti substrates [ 45 , 46 , 47 ]. Ag NPs have been proven to have a good killing effect on both Gram-positive cocci (e.g., S. aureus ) and Gram-negative bacilli (e.g., Escherichia coli ) [ 48 , 49 , 50 ]. In the study reported by Guan et al, a novel surface strategy involving the formation of polydopamine (PDA) and Ag nanoparticle-loaded TiO 2 NRDs coatings on Ti alloy was developed.…”
