Evaluation of the temperament and character properties of patients with ankylosing spondylitis

Abstract: Our study showed that the dimensions temperament and character are related to disease activation, and disease course is more severe in patients who have low scores in these TCI dimensions. Therefore, we suggest that evaluating temperament and character properties of AS patients will help clinicians to predict treatment compliance and motivation of patients during disease course.

“…20,29 The negative correlation between reward dependency and pain in patients with AS suggests that lower-reward-dependent people are more prone to pain perception. 30 Another differentiating factor between AS and MD seemed to be increased novelty seeking among patients with MD. High novelty seeking is biologically associated with low basal dopaminergic activity, which might be associated with the anhedonia seen in MD.…”

“…Personality and temperament characteristics are also among the factors affecting pain, 19 and the relationship between chronic pain diseases and the personality and temperament of patients has attracted attention in recent years. [20][21][22] According to the biopsychosocial theory, Cloninger 23 defined personality in 2 different dimensions: temperament and character. According to this theory, temperament reflects a biological and hereditary basic structure; the human character is formed due to the interaction of the individual's attitudes and the environment.…”

“…23,27,28 The relationship between somatic diseases causing chronic pain and the temperament of patients was also investigated, and similar results were obtained. [20][21][22] Understanding personality traits may play a critical role in understanding and treating chronic pain, as these traits may play a role in the development of and adaptation to chronic pain. 29 In our literature review, we did not find a controlled study on temperament evaluation in patients with CPP.…”
