Evaluation of the Redox State of Wistar Rats Submitted to High-Fat Diet Supplemented With Infusion of Ilex paraguariensis

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Ilex paraguariensis infusion on redox state of Wistar rats submitted to high-fat and standard diet. Glutathione determination and lipid peroxidation in the hippocampus tissues and liver was performed, as well as the analysis of gene expression of superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase by real-time polymerase chain reaction. The results from hippocampus showed that the groups fed with standard diet exhibited significant reduction of lipid peroxidatio… Show more

“…In vitro, TetraSOD ® has also been shown to upregulate GPx1 in human cells [ 22 ]. In addition, dietary supplementation with other antioxidant compounds and natural extracts has been demonstrated to upregulate GPx genes in rat hepatic tissue [ 66 , 67 , 68 ]. Damage at the cellular level by oxidative stress is attenuated by a range of different enzymes, and GPx is one of the most relevant enzymes, being involved in the reduction of hydrogen peroxide to H 2 O oxidizing GSH at the same time.…”

“…Furthermore, some of the pharmacological properties attributed to Ilex paraguariensis have been related to the high content of phenolic acids such as chlorogenic acids, 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid, and many others (39). Studies suggest that the administration of Ilex paraguariensis contributes to the body's defense against free radicals (40) and inhibits the oxidation of LDL cholesterol (39).…”
