Evaluation of the Quality of Action Cameras With Wide-Angle Lenses in Uav Photogrammetry

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The application of light-weight cameras in UAV photogrammetry is required due to restrictions in payload. In general, consumer cameras with normal lens type are applied to a UAV system. The availability of action cameras, like the GoPro Hero4 Black, including a wide-angle lens (fish-eye lens) offers new perspectives in UAV projects. With these investigations, different calibration procedures for fish-eye lenses are evaluated in order to quantify their accuracy potential in UAV photogrammetry. Herewith… Show more

“…The lens corrections applied to the fisheye GoPro images, although seeming somewhat drastic ( Figure 6), were effective, resulting in an Agisoft model relatively free of distortion ( Figure 8). Our results show that distorted source imagery can be addressed by simple tools that are not labor-intensive (e.g., Hastedt et al, 2016;Wierzbicki, 2018). The Agisoft model built from the corrected imagery was of sufficient quality to permit quantitative comparison with a model generated by a different camera.…”

“…The last input is whether or not to enable model scaling for cases where the models are of slightly different sizes [136]. CloudCompare uses a scaling factor only when it improves alignment between models, so its use is highly recommended, especially given that scaling has been useful with models generated with wide-angle imagery even in highly controlled laboratory settings [58]. Alignment scaling was therefore enabled in this study.…”

“…The accuracy of orthophotos produced with the GoPro images was tested against check points measured with RTK-GNSS approach. Hastedt et al (2016) investigated the reliability and accuracy of GoPro Hero4 for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based photogrammetry, using different software packages, calibration setup, acquisition mode (i.e., single images vs video) and resolution. A five-head GoPro system for indoor mapping purposes was proposed by Teo (2015).…”

“…Standard wide-angle lens (fish-eye lens) assembled in action cameras are characterized by short lengths of focal lengths and high radial distortions. So far in UAV photogrammetry dominated non-metric amateur cameras [1], [2], [3], [4], [5] which were equipped in low cost lens low-class. Carrying out the calibration of such cameras equipped with normal angle lens very often didn't provide the internal orientation elements for the repetitiveness of this elements.…”
