Background: This research aims to identify the most common morphology of the upper premolars in a group of local and nonlocal people in the UAE using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).Methods: CBCT images of a total of 214 intact maxillary premolars were analysed with 3D reconstruction GALAXIS viewer software. The Pearson Chi squared test and the two samples t test were applied.Results: In all, 90% of the maxillary first premolars had two roots (92% females, 88% males, 83% locals, 96% nonlocals). A total of 52% of maxillary second premolars had two roots (47% females, 56% males, 38% locals, 67% nonlocals). Two cases had three roots among local males. A significant difference of one root in the maxillary second premolar was observed between locals (63%) and nonlocals (33%), while two roots were higher among nonlocals (67%) than locals (37%, p = 0.002). Three roots were discovered in two teeth of the local UAE first premolar. The most common canal morphology in the maxillary first premolar group among local UAE subjects was type V (52%), and among nonlocal UAE subjects was type V (59%). Additional types included 7 (13.2%) identiﬁed and unrelated to the Vertucci classification. The dominant canal morphology in the maxillary second premolar among local UAE subjects was type II (32%), and among nonlocal UAE subjects was type V (25%); among the additional types, 12 (23.1%) were identiﬁed and not related to the Vertucci classification. There was a significant difference in the distance from the pulp chamber roof to the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) and the measurement between the single-rooted maxillary premolar CBCT for local UAE subjects was 1.36 mm (SD ±0.75) and for nonlocal subjects was 1 mm (SD ±0.27, p = 0.049). There were statistically significant differences in all measurements between multiple rooted maxillary premolar CBCTs for local UAE and South Asian subjects (p < 0.05)Conclusions: The results suggest a more quantitative approach to maxillary first and second premolar access cavity preparation in the UAE population to prevent errors and iatrogenic damage when identifying the canals; using CBCT measurements for more precise access preparations may be advantageous.

Aim:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the adequacy of three obturation techniques namely lateral condensation, EQ Fil (backfill obturation) and thermafil (core carrier obturation) techniques using three-dimensional (3D) helical computed tomography (CT) by volume rendering method.Materials and Methods:Thirty freshly extracted teeth were randomly divided into three groups of 10 teeth each. Biomechanical preparation was done in all the teeth using rotary instruments. All three sets of teeth were placed in helical CT slice scanner and were imaged before obturation. The three sets were then obturated by following methods: Group I: lateral condensation, Group II: EQ Fil (backfill) and Group III: thermafil (core carrier obturation).Volume of the pulp chamber and gutta-percha after obturation were calculated using volume rendering technique and adequacy of the obturation techniques were calculated.Statistical Analysis Used:One-way ANOVA and Multiple-Range Tukey Test by Tukey-HSD procedureResults:Mean change in lateral condensation (0.005±0.002) was significantly higher than that of thermafil obturation (0.002±0.001) [P<0.05].Conclusions:Conventional lateral condensation technique showed maximal inadequacy of obturation and thermafil obturation technique showed the least inadequacy of obturation when the volume of the specimens were calculated and reconstructed

Background: Dimension and location of pulp chamber are important during access cavity preparation. It allows clinician in instruments selection, orientation and depth of cutting during the process. Analysis of these has been done in preoperative intraoral periapical radiograph that gives two-dimensional image. The radiograph has been blamed now and then for the inaccurate results and iatrogenic damage occurred due to the inaccurate results. Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) provides three-dimensional images and is taken as standard. Hence the aim of the study is to compare intra-oral periapical (IOPA) radiograph and CBCT to determine the landmarks for accurate results Methods: 50 intact two-rooted maxillary first premolars were collected and numbered. Periapical radiograph Images and CBCT images of these 50 teeth were taken and divided as; Group I: 50 IOPAR and Group II: 50 CBCT images. Landmarks marking and measurement was done using tracing paper and x-ray viewer for IOPA images and Planmeca Romexis software for CBCT images. Data were collected and analysed with descriptive and inferential statistics by using Statistical Package of Social Science (SPSS) software version 16. Results: The averages of group I are 7.44, 10.23mm 14.33mm, 4.1mm, 6.89mm and 2.79mm respectively. The averages of in group II are 6.95mm, 9.58mm, 14.03mm, 4.45mm, 7.07mm and 2.63mm respectively. There is statistically significant difference in measurement A and measurement B between group I and group II. Conclusions: This indicates that there are chances of overestimation of measurement A and B with IOPAR.
