Abstract:Probiotics를 WHO (the World Health Organization)와 FAO (the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations)에서는 "적정량 섭취 시 숙주에게 유익한 효 과를 주는 살아있는 미생물"이라고 정의하고 있다 [1].Probiotics의 어원을 해석하면 "for life (생명을 위하여)"란 뜻 이며, 이는 "against life (생명에 반대하여)"인 항생제 (antibiotics)와 반대되는 말이다. 항생제는 유해한 미생물을 제거하기 위해 설계되고 이용하는 것이고, probiotics는 인체 에 유익한 미생물을 의도적으로 제공하기 위한 것이다.
