Evaluation of the optical performance for aspheric intraocular lenses in relation with tilt and decenter errors

Abstract: To evaluate and compare the effect of misalignment and tilt on the optical performance of different aspheric intraocular lens (IOL) designs. Methods Three aspheric IOLs with a different quantity of spherical aberration (SA) have been designed and the effect of IOL misalignment and tilt on the imaging quality of an eye model has been numerically assessed using a commercial optical design software. The prototypes have been manufactured by lathe turning and tested in vitro using the same optical bench (PMTF, Lamb… Show more

“…on-axis MTF values obtained for Navarro's eye model, results with the myopic cornea were lower for all the IOL designs. Regarding the optical quality behaviour of the lenses with tilt, we observed what it was known already: MTF degradation was less dependent on the IOL design [12]. The tendency followed in the MTF degradation with tilt was similar for all lenses, varying the initial on-axis MTF value in relation to the studied cornea.…”

“…The aspheric surfaces used to model the different IOLs take the form of a rotationally symmetric conic cross-section (see more details in Ref. [ 12 ]). Lens A was an IOL with negative fourth-order Zernike SA ( ) to totally compensate for the fourth-order Zernike positive SA ( ) of the Navarro cornea (SA = 0.139 μm at a 6.00 mm entrance pupil diameter).…”

“…In fact, the higher quantities of spherical aberration correction were associated with a greater optical degradation. Contrarily, the effect of tilt on optical performance was less sensitive to the IOL design in the clinically typical range of tilt errors evaluated [ 60 ].…”

“…Liu and associates found the misalignment of a multifocal IOL markedly decreased the visual quality [36]. Pérez-Gracia and associates found the misalignment of aspheric IOLs could increase the ocular aberrations and affect the MTF [37]. Taketani and associates found there was a stong correlation between coma and IOL tilt [38].…”
