Evaluation of the olfactory bulb volume and olfactory threshold in patients with nasal polyps and impact of functional endoscopic sinus surgery: a longitudinal study

Abstract

The results of our study show that FESS has a significant impact on OBV increment and olfactory threshold decrement. The olfactory bulb is a plastic structure and improvement in peripheral olfactory function results in increase in OBV. However, further studies are mandated, in order to establish this result.

Olfactory bulb neuroplasticity: A prospective cohort study in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps

“…Our study showed a statistically significant difference in the OBV between the patients with CRSwNP, and the healthy controls, which is similar to the findings, reported by Herzallah et al study. In addition, we found that patients with CRSwNP showed a significant increase in the OBVs after the endoscopic sinus surgery which is comparable to the results that were reported by Sadeghi et al who documented an increase in the OBVs after FESS, and Gudziol et al who stated that the OBVs increased significantly in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis after 3 months of medical treatment. Our results support the findings of the other studies that demonstrated that olfactory deprivation may have a direct influence on the OBVs.…”

Odor Sensitivity After Intranasal Insulin Application Is Modulated by Gender
