Evaluation of the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) in assessing lifetime and recent problems

Abstract: Investigated the reliability, validity and dimensionality of scores obtained by acute psychiatric inpatients (N = 120) on the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test adapted to assess lifetime and current symptomatology. Under most conditions, test scores and classifications were reasonably consistent over brief intervals and the underlying structure of test content was unidimensional. The test showed high sensitivity (88%), insufficient specificity (50%), and modest classification accuracy overall (58%) and thus u… Show more

“…Although no prior research has examined the test-retest characteristics of the AUDIT, Bradley et al (1998) found that self-administered alcohol consumption items (AUDIT item 1-3) were reliable over a 3-month period, with Spearman indexes in the range of 0.62 to 0.83. The test-retest performance of the H-AUDIT reported herein is comparable or slightly higher than similar measures obtained with an alternate alcohol use disorders screening instrument (the MAST), with correlation coefficients of 0.84 to 0.97, which varied in inverse proportion with the delay between the test and retest (Skinner and Sheu, 1982;Zung, 1982).…”

“…Mothers completed the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) (Zung 1982) and the Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST) (Skinner 1982). The MAST is designed to identify alcoholism using 25 yes/no questions that identify problematic behaviors associated with alcohol use.…”

“…The MAST is a 25-item questionnaire, which is used in different forms to screen clinical and nonclinical populations for the presence of alcoholism (Selzer, 1976;Zung, 1982). This instrument has proven test-retest reliability and is particularly useful as a screening device (Hedlund & Vieweg, 1984).…”
