Evaluation of the Masticatory Efficiency at the Patients with New Complete Dentures

Abstract: BACKGROUND:There are a lot of factors influencing the efficiency of mastication; therefore there are also a lot of methods for testing this efficiency.OBJECTIVE:The study aimed to test the efficiency of mastication and evaluate it in the function of time, based on previous experience with the complete dentures.METHODS:A total of 88 patients (42 female, 46 male, mean age 52.2, SD = 5.76), complete dentures wearers, participated in this study. Masticatory functions were investigated by using the method of electr… Show more

“…These findings are in agreement with prior studies reporting improved quality of life and mastication after CD replacement . Consistent with our subjective MA and OHRQoL results, the use of new well‐fitted CDs has been shown to provide better adaptation to tissues, which increases maximum bite force and promotes masseter muscle development …”

“…19,20 However, masticatory function tends to improve by a small amount over an adaptation period to reach its original level after adaptation period of 3 months, with a greater improvement for patients with an initially worse masticatory performance. 20 Shala et al 21 conducted a study that investigated the combined analysis of both masticatory efficiency and the level of the functional adaptation on complete dentures and observed that masticatory function showed the same dynamics (getting to a stationary condition 15 weeks after the new dentures insertion), influenced by the previous patient experience with denture use. 21 In our study, MP was similar for patients using the new dentures for 3-6 and more than 6 months only for the 20 cycles test.…”

Luraschi et al 22 demonstrated in a study employing functional magnetic resonance imaging that edentulous patients need 3 months to reach the same levels of activation of the masticatory and the sensory cortex post-insertion of the new complete dentures.…”

“…This is associated with denture stability and can influence masticatory function, acting as a possible limitation to our findings. In addition, the time using the old CDs before inserting the new ones could also influence the MP. However, this characteristic was similar between groups ( P = 0.079) and did not affect our findings.…”
