Evaluation of the Major Air Pollutants Levels and Its Interactions With Meteorological Parameters in Ankara

Abstract: The aim of this study is to examine levels, temporal changes and interactions of major air pollutants with meteorological variables in Ankara, Turkey. The level of air pollutants namely PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO, NO2, NOX, O3, CO was evaluated monthly, seasonally, and annually during 2019. The statistical relationship between air pollutants and ambient temperature, relative humidity and air pressure was examined and discussed. The pollutants concentrations started to rise in the morning and evening hours (excluding… Show more

“…eliminating the burning of coal and fossil fuels, new technologies in the automotive industry) that have been implemented, which was confirmed by our results, as we observed a decrease in the concentration of all analysed pollutants, except CO in B. Bystrica. The only pollutant that was found to intensify the pollen season of the studied taxa was CO, but it is difficult to isolate the influence of this parameter from meteorological factors which significantly impact the concentration of chemical pollutants in the air (Ulutaş et al 2021 ). Similar to our results, Ziska and Caulfield ( 2000 ) found a positive influence of carbon oxides, together with temperature and sunshine, on plant growth.…”

“…The air quality in the city is influenced by various factors, including emissions from industrial facilities, vehicular traffic, residential heating systems, and the geographical characteristics of the surrounding region (Kadioǧlu et al 2010, Bari and Kindzierski 2015, Ulutaş et al 2021. Additionally, meteorological conditions, such as wind patterns, temperature inversions, and precipitation, play a significant role in the dispersion and accumulation of air pollutants in the city (He et al 2017, Tiğli and Cangür 2019, Bei et al 2020, Deak et al 2020, Ulutaş et al 2021.…”

“…O3 is known as a reactive air pollutant. Traffic and industrial activities together with meteorological factors, topography and chemical reactions increase its concentration levels [31][32]. Seasonal variation of O3 concentrations is more apparent in summer months than in winter due to it is particularly dependent on effective solar radiation, high humidity and high temperature [33].…”
