Purpose: To compare the choroidal thickness (CT) measured by enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) in preeclamptic, healthy pregnant, and healthy nonpregnant women. Methods: Studies that focused on the CT evaluation of pregnant women were retrieved by searching PubMed, Embase, Ovid, Cochrane, and Web of Science. We used Stata 14.0 SE for the meta-analysis and presented the results as the weighted mean difference (WMD) with a corresponding 95% CI. Results: A total of 14 studies with 1,227 participants were included in our meta-analysis. The CT of the healthy pregnancies (μm, WMD = 34.19, 95% CI: 20.63–47.76) was significantly higher than that of the nonpregnancies (Test of WMD = 0: z = 4.94, p = 0.000), but the CT of the preeclampsia (μm, WMD = 54.30, 95% CI: –13.40 to 122.01) was not significantly different from the nonpregnancies (Test of WMD = 0: z = 1.57, p = 0.116). In the preeclampsia versus healthy pregnancy group, 3 studies found that the choroid was thinner with preeclampsia, only one study found the CT increased. Conclusions: This meta-analysis suggested that the CT of the healthy pregnant women was significantly higher than that of the nonpregnant women. The presence of preeclampsia might complicate this situation. Most studies found that the CT decreased in the preeclamptic patients because of the increases in the systemic vasospasm and the blood pressure, which led to no significant difference compared with the nonpregnant women.

Fourier prensibi ile çalışan optik koherens tomografi cihazı ile retina, RSLT ve koroid tabakalarının görüntüleri alındı. Verilerin istatistiksel analizinde bağımsız örneklem t-testi ve bağımsız ör-neklem tek yönlü varyans analizi kullanıldı. B Bu ul lg gu ul la ar r: : Çalışmaya katılan ikinci ve üçüncü trimesterdeki gebelerin ortalama gebelik haftaları sırasıyla 21,25±3,26 (12-23) ve 30,03±3,44 (25-38) hafta idi. Gebelerle kontrol grubunda merkezi, temporal ve nazal retina kalınlıklarında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı fark saptanmadı (p değerleri sırasıyla 0,559, 0,479 ve 0,782). Ortalama RSLT kalınlığı gebe olmayanlarla karşılaştırıldığında gebelerde istatistiksel olarak daha kalın idi (p=0,035). Ancak, tek yönlü varyans analiziyle üç grubun RSLT kalınlığı arasındaki fark istatistiksel olarak anlamlı düzeye ulaşmadı (p=0,108). Purpose/ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate two‐dimensional ultrasound and shear‐wave elastography (SWE) in evaluating optic neuropathy in preeclampsia.MethodsNinety‐one singleton pregnant women (51 with preeclampsia [observation group]; 40 without complications [control group]) admitted between January 2022 and April 2022 participated in this study.Optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) and optic nerve stiffness measurement (ONSM) were measured using two‐dimensional ultrasound and SWE, respectively, and compared between the two groups. Receiver operating characteristic curves were employed to evaluate the performance of ONSD, ONSM, and combination (ONSD + ONSM) for diagnosing preeclampsia.ResultsThe observation (preeclampsia) group ONSD and ONSM were significantly higher than those in the control group (p < 0.05). Optimal diagnostic values for ONSD and ONSM were 4.10 mm and 11.20 kPa, respectively. Areas under the curve for diagnosing preeclampsia were 0.958 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.926–0.990) for ONSD, 0.939 (95% CI, 0.894–0.985) for ONSM, and 0.982 (95% CI, 0.962–1.000) for ONSD + ONSM. There was no significant difference between ONSD and ONSM in diagnosing preeclampsia (p = 0.436). However, ONSD + ONSM was significantly advantageous over ONSD or ONSM alone in diagnosing preeclampsia (p = 0.033; p = 0.014).ConclusionsUltrasonic evaluation of the optic nerve can quantitatively assess optic nerve changes in pregnant women with preeclampsia.
