Evaluation of the impacts of relay coordination on power system reliability

Abstract: Summary The security and reliability of a power system rely on establishing and maintaining proper coordination among protective relays. In addition to interrupting unnecessary loads, the probability of exposing hidden failures in protection system components such as Circuit Breakers (CBs) may increase as a consequence of miscoordination among relays. In order to evaluate how malfunction of a protection system can degrade the reliability of the system, this paper proposes a new Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) … Show more

“…On the other hand, Monte Carlo simulations can provide a probabilistic approach to the same objective by generating a chronological sequence of random events, thus building the history of each component over a given period. “…In this case, it is possible to identify and correct critical situations, but the quality of service of the network is not evaluated using reliability indices, despite mentioning that the quality of service improves with the addition of DG. Another author 7 studies the negative impact of the malfunctioning of the protection system, caused by delayed operations of some relays, on the reliability of the system. He used an algorithm based on Markov and Monte Carlo methods, although it does not consider the addition of DG to the network.…”

“…In solving the presented allocation problem, as in the charging/discharging schedule problem, a combination of the sequential Monte Carlo and optimization methods has been used. The Monte Carlo method is adopted to obtain the load model, electricity price model and ENS index because these components have an uncertain nature [43].…”

“…This issue, which is one of the negative sides of an increase in DER penetration, may interrupt in coordination among protective devices. Moreover, it can cause the overall fault current to exceed the designed capability level of distribution components, like CBs, and so degrading the reliability [19]. Replacement of all the feeders' CBs of an HV substation may be required in these situations.…”
