Evaluation of the Impact of Optical Coherence Tomography on Pediatrician Otologic Examination Judgment

Abstract: Accurate diagnosis of otitis media is imperative to judicious antibiotic prescription. Visualization of the tympanic membrane and accurate identification of middle ear effusion with standard otoscopy is inherently challenging in pediatrics, especially in the youngest children who are most at risk for otitis media. With the average diagnostic accuracy among primary care physicians of 50% and accurate identification of normal tympanic membrane versus acute otitis media versus otitis media with effusion ranging f… Show more

“…The OtoSight Middle Ear Scope (PhotoniCare) is a video otoscope which allows for direct visualization of the tympanic membrane with optical coherence tomography. The technology also allows physicians to view beyond the tympanic membrane to assess for middle ear pathology 4 . It uses low‐coherence light to capture 2D and 3‐dimensional (3D) images of the middle ear tissue.…”

The technology allows clinicians to visualize past cerumen, other canal obstructions, and opacified tympanic membranes to guide the clinician in evaluating middle ear disease.…”
