Evaluation of the force generated by gradual deflection of 0.016-inch NiTi and stainless steel orthodontic wires in self-ligating metallic and esthetic brackets

Abstract: Background The purpose of this study was to evaluate the deflection forces of 0.016-inch Nitinol and stainless steel orthodontic wires, in association to different self-ligating brackets. Material and Methods Specimens were mounted in a clinical simulation model and evaluated in a Universal Testing Machine (INSTRON 3342), using a 10N load cell and ISO 15,841, as a protocol. Eight of these models were prepared, each one for the bonding of each set of self-ligating access… Show more

“…According to the current results and previous publications, the first wire to favor seems to be the 0.014-inch CuNiTi 27, correcting malocclusion up to 3 mm. 30,31 Montasser et al had previously noticed that even a 0.014-inch wire caused high forces. 21 Smaller diameters could be beneficial especially for CuNiTi 35.…”

“…1 Prolonged orthodontic management prods a lot of patients, Orthodontists are trying since long to develop certain approach strategies that will actually assist to increase the rate at which the tooth movement takes place during orthodontic treatment. 2,3 The rate of tooth movement per se can be accelerated by administration of drugs such as prostaglandins, electrical stimulations, vitamin D and osteocalcin, use of ultrasound around the sockets in the jaws. The injection method is always accompanied by certain degree of pain as well as discomfort to the patients.…”
