Especially in recent years, the environmental problems of countries have been increasing due to the acceleration of industrialization, increasing population, continuous increase in the consumption and energy requirements of the society and the development of technology. In order to eliminate these problems, countries take many measures and precautions. This study aims to compare Eastern European countries by evaluating their positions in the environmental sustainability performance index (EPI). For this purpose, the importance levels of the criteria were found with ENTROPY, which is in the objective category of multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods, and then the ranking of the countries in the environmental sustainability performance index was determined with Complex Proportional Assessmnet (COPRAS) and Weighted Aggregated Sum Product Assessment (WASPAS) methods. The data used in the evaluation of the environmental sustainability performance index “The 2022 Environmental Performance Index (EPI)” ranking of Eastern European countries is the data prepared by Yale University and obtained from the relevant web address. According to the results obtained, the ranking of the criteria in terms of their importance levels were ranked as water resources, waste management and agriculture, and the rankings obtained according to COPRAS and WASPAS methods differed in the environmental sustainability performance ranking of the countries, and it was determined that the WASPAS method gave more consistent results.

The approach of evaluating the final scores of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods according to the strength of association with real-life rankings is interesting for comparing MCDM methods. This approach has recently been applied mostly to financial data. In these studies, where it is emphasized that some methods show more stable success, it would be useful to see the results that will emerge by testing the approach on different data structures more comprehensively. Moreover, not only the final MCDM results but also the performance of normalization techniques and data types (fuzzy or crisp), which are components of MCDM, can be compared using the same approach. These components also have the potential to affect MCDM results directly. In this direction, in our study, the economic performances of G-20 (Group of 20) countries, which have different data structures, were calculated over ten different periodic decision matrices. Ten different crisp-based MCDM methods (COPRAS, CODAS, MOORA, TOPSIS, MABAC, VIKOR (S, R, Q), FUCA, and ELECTRE III) with different capabilities were used to better visualize the big picture. The relationships between two different real-life reference anchors and MCDM methods were used as a basis for comparison. The CODAS method develops a high correlation with both anchors in most periods. The most appropriate normalization technique for CODAS was identified using these two anchors. Interestingly, the maximum normalization technique was the most successful among the alternatives (max, min–max, vector, sum, and alternative ranking-based). Moreover, we compared the two main data types by comparing the correlation results of crisp-based and fuzzy-based CODAS. The results were very consistent, and the “Maximum normalization-based fuzzy integrated CODAS procedure” was proposed to decision-makers to measure the economic performance of the countries.

Many firms are unaware of which patent is comparatively more important in their patent portfolio. A firm needs to prioritize patents in terms of effective management of its patent portfolio and efficient allocation of resources. The COVID-19 pandemic was one of the most impactful disasters affecting daily human life in the last century. It is critical to evaluate and prioritize technologies developed to reduce the impact of this pandemic. To this end, patents related to COVID-19 are prioritized with the CRITIC-based TOPSIS approach in this study. 935 patents-related data were obtained from the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) patent database. To the best of the authors' knowledge, there is no study in the literature that uses the CRITIC-based TOPSIS approach to prioritize patents for the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of this study showed decision-makers and investors can consider technologies related to anti-infectives, medicinal preparations containing organic active substances, and medicinal preparations with a special physical form as investment options.
