Evaluation of the environmental and economic impacts of electric propulsion systems onboard ships: case study passenger vessel

Abstract: The International Maritime Organization (IMO) announced that maritime transport share by 2.89% in global greenhouse gases. Electric propulsion system appears as a promising option for reducing ship emissions, especially for high-powered vessels. The aim of the current paper is to investigate the environmental and economic impact of using electric propulsion systems. Simple eco-environmental model was presented to assess the best propulsion system for passenger ships. A comparison between diesel electric (DE) a… Show more

“…Squirrel-cage induction motors are widely used in various industries and transport. They are used in technological lines of heavy engineering [9,10], as traction motors on railway rolling stock [11][12][13], as auxiliary equipment on railway rolling stock [14,15] and in water transport [16,17]. Thus, the quality and accuracy of the execution of technological processes depend on the technical condition of induction motors.…”

“…As a result, they tried to show the margins and places of error between the two data. Ammar and Seddiek (2021), in their study, compared two different propulsion systems for a passenger ship. They compared the battery-free DE propulsion system and the COGES system from an environmental and economic perspective.…”

“…On the other hand, the emission factors are 539 g/kWh, 16.4 g/kWh and 3.29 [g/kWh] for CO 2 , NOx and SOx respectively for conventional diesel engine operated with MDO (1%S)(Elkafas et al 2021a). Furthermore, the energy e ciency of the case study can be assessed by using the EEDI procedure(Ammar and Seddiek 2021). EEDI can be assessed by calculated the reference value through Eq.…”
