Evaluation of the Eiken latex agglutination test for anti-Toxoplasma antibodies and seroprevalence of Toxoplasma infection among factory workers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Abstract: Sera from 170 factory workers aged 18-45 years enrolled in a pilot study of human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) infection in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, were screened for anti-Toxoplasma immunoglobulin G antibodies by the Sabin-Feldman test (reference standard) and the Eiken latex agglutination test (under evaluation for use in developing countries). Based on the Sabin-Feldman test, the prevalence of anti-Toxoplasma antibodies was 80.0% (95% confidence interval 73.9-86.1%). The sensitivity and specificity of the… Show more

“…The LA test employed in the present study has shown 96.3% sensitivity and 97.1% specifi city (29) and ease-of-use in realworld contexts; it also has a high qualitative agreement with the Sabin-Feldman dye test, which represents the gold standard (13) . Moreover, the LA test has been widely used in remote or rural areas in many developing countries (12) (22) (30) .…”

“…A study by Woldemichael et al in Ethiopia on HIV-positive and HIVnegative adults showed an 80% prevalence. 9 Simpore et al showed a 25.3% prevalence in pregnant women in Burkina Faso, and Lindström et al showed a 54% prevalence in HIVpositive adults in Uganda. 10,11 There are several possible explanations for the low prevalences found in this study, as well as the reported historical differences in prevalences between regions.…”

“…The infection rate reported in this study was higher than those reported for other African countries (7,11,12) The prevalence of toxoplasmosis in Ethiopia varies from 8% to 89% (6,(13)(14)(15)(16). One of the causes for this high prevalence is attributed to the close contact of humans with cats.…”
