Evaluation of the efficacy of drug treatment based on measurement of the oxidative stress, using reactive oxygen metabolites and biological antioxidant potential, in children with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

Abstract: Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder, mainly characterized by impairment of social communication and restricted interests. ASD is frequently accompanied by attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which is characterized by carelessness, hyperactivity and impulsivity (ASD/ADHD). It has been suggested that ASD and ADHD are associated with oxidative stress, that is, that patients with ASD/ADHD are in a state of increased oxidative stress. There are currenr tly no obj… Show more

“…The analysis of comparison between the genders revealed the d-ROMs was significantly higher in women. This result agrees with other studies carried out in healthy individuals (47) and individuals with various pathologies (35,43,46,49,59,66). One of the possible explanations for this result is the hormonal changes in women associated with blood concentrations of estrogen and, therefore, on menopausal status (46).…”

“…Finally, the levels of MDA and free sulphydryl groups in the spleen were higher in 5-week-old SHR than in control rats [ 66 ]. Recently, evaluation of serum levels of hydroperoxide, an oxidative stress marker, was shown to be higher in preschool children with ADHD [ 67 ].…”

“…The exclusion criteria were: (1) categorized as having GD according to the IGD-20 Test, (2) having an intellectual disability, (3) having a psychiatric disorder, and (4) those refusing to provide informed consent. Diagnosis was based on the criteria for ASD as defined in the DSM-5; Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2); and Parent-Interview ASD Rating Scale-Text Revision (PARS-TR) [ 25 ]. The study period was from April 2020 to August 2020.…”
